Grabbing People by the Heart

Grabbing the world by the heart- Young Adult Life Transitions Program

Christopher Polisoto is a charismatic young man who has participated in the Young Adult Life Transitions Program (YALT) at Erie Community College's South Campus for nearly four years. Chris enjoys walking around the campus interacting and talking with other students and participants. The YALT program is designed to help young adults with developmental disabilities between the ages of 18 to 23 learn to be more independent.

According to Chris, "It is important to address three basic principles that the program offers: to be independent, promote good social and life skills, and develop job skills." The YALT program has many methods of approaching each participant's needs to reach and achieve the goals they set out to accomplish. According to Chris, "There are several proactive activities and outings that we do to achieve that." When asked about his own personal goals Chris replied, "YALT will help me to live on my own without assistance." Chris is actively participating in the community and hopes to catch the interest of future employers by increasing his and others involvement in the business sector. Chris believes this is a great learning experience for him and any YALT participant, "Learning is the key to doing job, social, and life skills on your own," he said. Staff members are a key part in making the program succeed.

Nell Downey is a dynamic team leader and community based instructor for the YALT program and comments on its benefits. "The growth of individuals in the program has been personally rewarding to see, getting to work with curriculums has been great for staff and participants, and learning budgeting and community participation is beneficial for all of us," remarked Nell. According to Chris, "The YALT program is an opportunity for young adult with a disability to become successful and feel connected among all people around the world. My advice to you all is: 'Grab the world by the heart.'" Chris and his fellow friends and staff are doing just that.
