Get Out the Vote - Resources

GOTV Over the years, People Inc. has joined Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts. With a Presidential election this year, many employees, people we support, families and advocates are even more interested. To support this initiative, we have compiled the following resources to encourage everyone to participate in the voting process.

The deadline for registration was Friday, October 9, 2020.

  • The Self-Advocacy Association of New York State (SANYS) - Resources for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities 
  • SANYS Media: Register to Vote and Vote 411 - Step-by-step directions on how to complete the voter registration form and use the Vote 411 website to find out if you are registered, where candidates stand and how to vote
  • Check your voter registration status
  • Apply for an absentee ballot – The last day to apply is Tuesday, October 27
  • AARP New York: How to Vote in New York’s 2020 Election: What You Need to Know
  • WNY Independent Living Center will pick up ballots and drop them off at the Board of Elections. They can also transport people with any disability, via a fully-accessible van, to vote in Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans counties. Pick-up can be scheduled by calling Independence Express at 716.836.0822 ext. 150. More information can be found in this article from Niagara Frontier Publications.
  • Lyft is offering free rides to the polls for voters with disabilities (up to $30, roundtrip). Voters with disabilities can use the code NDRNVOTE to claim their free ride to their polling place to vote or drop off their absentee ballot. This includes early voting, Election Day voting, or dropping off absentee ballots at any polling location.

  • Candidates’ Hour: Presented by the Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York (DDAWNY) and hosted virtually through Zoom. Candidates running for state and federal offices were invited. The candidates were presented with a series of questions concerning their positions that affect the interests of people and families with developmental disabilities. Western New York candidates presented on October 14, while Rochester/Finger Lakescandidates shared their positions on October 15.
  • On Tuesday, October 27 and Friday, October 30, WNY Independent Living is hosting virtual “Meet the Candidates” days from 1 to 4 p.m. on their YouTube page. Those without internet access who want to listen to the event can call 1.425.436.6200 with Access Code 595227.
