Niagara County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit Supported by People Inc. Pine Senior Living
The Niagara County Sheriff’s Department has had an exciting beginning to their summer. Tenants of People Inc. Pine Senior Living and their site manager, Barbara Jacobs, recently teamed up for a fundraising project. The money raised was donated to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit.
Over the years, the sheriff’s department has conducted many educational programs for the tenants of the Lockport-based apartments. Prior to this fundraiser, tenants had seen demonstrations from another dog unit of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department. A few months afterward, they were saddened to hear of the dog’s death and were inspired to give back to the department.
Starting in January of 2018, the tenants began raising money. Through auctions, a white elephant sale, bake sales, raffles and monetary donations throughout the year, they were able to raise a grand total $550, which the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department used to purchase a K-9 bullet proof vest.
“The tenants were very excited to be doing this because it was a way to give back to the sheriffs who always come when we need them,” said Barbara. “It was also a great way to support their K-9 work companions.”

Summer Happenings
The Museum of disABILITY History, a project of People Inc., is excited to bring you a variety of happenings, including:
  • Award-winning advocate and children’s book author Engelic Everett presented at the National Down Syndrome Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, being held June 27-30. Engelic, who lives and thrives with Down syndrome, is representing the Museum of disABILITY History and its “In Celebration of Down Syndrome” traveling exhibit. Engelic’s book, Olivia The Bully, published by the Museum of disABILITY History, shares the values of friendship, understanding and loving one another.
  • Speaking of books, the Museum of disABILITY History is hosting “Book Month” throughout July. All books sold in the Museum store will be 10 percent off (20 percent off for People Inc. employees). Now would be a good time to check out a new book sold in the Museum store, The Colony Chronicles, which presents in beautifully haunting detail the rise and fall of Craig Colony. It is written by David Mack-Hardiman and photographed by Char Szabo-Perricelli. Shop during the Museum’s regular hours at 3826 Main Street, Buffalo, NY, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • The disABILITY Etiquette and Awareness Program continues to be available for businesses, organizations and schools. This program is important because it encourages us to treat all people with dignity and respect, while also teaching to view people with disabilities in a global perspective beyond their disabilities.
If you have questions about any of these happenings or would like to schedule a tour, email info@museumofdisability.org, call 716.629.3626 or check out the Museum of disABILITY History’s Facebook page for resources and news updates.
