About one in six young adults in the U.S. have one or more developmental disabilities or other developmental delays. Sometimes, depending on their needs and abilities, group homes can offer these young adults a comfortable, safe environment where they can receive the important care they need.
For five young adults in Grand Island, NY, who range in age from 21 to 29, their group home is their haven. Severe disabilities and medical complications mean they spend the majority of the year indoors. Because their ability to go outside is limited, staff look to items such as sunlamps, recorded bird sounds, beanbags, balls and keys as to serve as an alternative. While each person is unique with their own personalities and hobbies, what these five share is a desire to be around others, have fun and enjoy nature.
Inspired by what they have in common, a fundraising campaign is underway to bring these residents closer to what they love. Funds raised will help build a sunroom where they can enjoy the seasons year-round without leaving the safety of their home. The room will bring the outdoors in and will include amazing sensory features like music and a way to see the stars. So far, half of the funds have been raised. We need your help!
