People Inc. Initiates Cemetery Restoration at the Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery
Staff and volunteers from People Inc., Western New York’s largest human services agency, will restore the Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery on Niagara Street Extension in Lockport. James M. Boles, Ed.D., president of People Inc., received permission from county officials to begin this project. This is the fourth institutional cemetery in which this agency has been involved. Dr. Boles conducted a presentation about the history of the project to a Buffalo State College Anthropology class on June 11, at the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

Campaign for Disability Employment Announces Winners of “What Can YOU Do?” Video Contest
The Campaign for Disability Employment, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, has selected the winning videos in the 2012 “What can YOU do?” video contest. This nationwide contest challenged filmmakers to produce videos that show the diverse skills that people with disabilities offer and challenge misconceptions about people with disabilities in the workforce.
What WILL you do to inspire others? Jake from People Inc.’s Young Adult Life Transitions Program at University at Buffalo shared what he will do through a video contest, “Campaign for Disability Employment’s “What can YOU do?” He was won first place for the “What Will You Do?” Youth Category. Congratulations, Jake!

Campaign for Disability Employment (CDE) is a collaborative effort among several disability and business organizations that seek to promote positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities by encouraging employers and others to recognize the value and talent they bring to the workplace, as well as the dividend to be realized by fully including people with disabilities at work.

People Inc. Ambassadors Volunteer at Buffalo Marathon
Approximately 5,200 runners from around the world took part in the 2012 Buffalo Marathon’s full and half marathons, and four-person relay race, which were held May 27, in Buffalo. People Inc. Ambassadors: Rhonda Frederick, Concetta Ferguson, Mary Beth Iwanski, Andy and Wende Burgio, Joanne Haberer, Serenity Hamlin, Gayle Mertzlufft and Matthew Iwanski were cheerleaders and gave out refreshing water and Gatorade at Mile Marker 25 nearing the end of the race. Elmwood Health Center staff: Mark Zambron, Lisa Zambron, Brian Porebski, Jenee Harding, Lisa Passarelli, Ann-Didio-Harbin and Michael Ralbovsky provided medical support and aide to runners at the finish line. The morning cloud cover that kept temperatures down below 70 degrees was very welcome certainly by the runners and volunteers, too. With terrific weather and great enthusiasm it was a fantastic day of service for People Inc. Ambassadors.

Recapping Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day
The 24th Annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day (DD Day) took its 2012 Conference to Niagara Falls, New York. This year’s keynote speaker was Buffalo native Zach Anner, host of “Rollin with Zach,” on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN television network travel show. The day was informative with workshops and an exhibitor fair. People Inc. Ambassadors were on hand to assist and inform the community at its exhibit table. Lizbeth Booth, Ph.D., A.C.S.W. of People Inc., presented a workshop entitled “Informed Choice.” The convention is the largest of its kind in the United States and has long been a key event in Western New York.
