Critical Residential Need for 980 People with Developmental Disabilities
980 Flags Placed for People with Developmental Disabilities Waiting for a Home

The Developmental Disabilities Alliance of WNY (DDAWNY) Family Committee of Family Advocates for individuals with developmental disabilities organized a flag demonstration on June 1, 2013, at Buffalo’s Canalside. Flags were placed at the ceremonial event to represent each of the 980 people currently waiting for a home. There are 980 people living throughout the community with developmental disabilities who are registered with NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) seeking a suitable residence. Since 2008, NYS has stopped all construction of group homes and there are no plans to build more. Family members, individuals with developmental disabilities, elected officials, human service professionals and supporters participated in the event.
