Ceremony Marks Restoration of the Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery The Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery Restoration Ceremony, hosted by the Museum of disABILITY History, People Inc. and Niagara County officials, was held on June 5, at 5526 Niagara Street Extension in Lockport. Staff members from the Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc.; Catherine Emerson, Niagara County historian; William Ross, chairman, Niagara County Legislature and cemetery restoration volunteers were in attendance.
The event marked the restoration of the neglected cemetery and honored the lives of the more than 1,400 Niagara County Almshouse residents who died and were buried there, most with unmarked graves, between 1830-1916. The ceremony included the unveiling of a memorial plaque and refurbished Merritt monument, the only inscribed gravestone at the location. Approximately 40 names of individuals laid to rest in the cemetery were read during the program. Click here to see photos from the event on Facebook.

Cheers for Mitch Weis of People Inc.’s Themed Learning Club
It was a great year for the Grand Island Lacrosse Team….and Mitch Weis would agree! As the team manager and ball boy for four years, he did not play in the game. Mitch, who has Down syndrome and is a participant of People Inc.’s Themed Learning Club, recently got a chance to play! The coaches and fellow team players were determined to have Mitch in the game! The Themed Learning Club is one of People Inc.’s After School Respite programs, which provides families with quality care after school or work for family members with developmental disabilities ages 10-21. Service Coordinator Netta Rowe Celebrates 40 Years!
As People Inc. has flourished over the years, so has Netta Rowe, People Inc. service coordinator, who has worked with the agency for 40 years! A service award celebration was recently held in honor of Netta. She has helped hundreds of individuals with developmental disabilities receive services. Netta has held numerous positions within the agency, including secretary, receptionist, administrative specialist and admissions specialist. She has been in her current role as service coordinator since 2004. Netta’s dedication to People Inc. is admired by many and she has been a positive representative for the agency.

New York Senators Join Rally for People with Developmental Disabilities at State Capital A diverse group of approximately 400 advocates converged on the steps of the State Capitol to send Governor Andrew Cuomo a message, “No More Waiting!” Individuals with developmental disabilities, parents and caregivers, as well as professionals in the field of serving people with developmental disabilities rallied in front of the state capitol in Albany on May 20. They were joined by New York Senators Mark Grisanti, Timothy Kennedy and George Maziarz and Assemblymember Harvey Weisenberg of Long Beach and Chairwoman of the Mental Health Committee Aileen Gunther. Rally participants called attention to the immediate need for group home living. Presently, there are 1,200 individuals on the waiting list in WNY waiting for residential living; 12,000 statewide and 4,000 that need immediate living. The rally focused on sending Governor Cuomo a message that the time is now to develop a plan on this ever-growing crisis. Barb DeLong, parent, advocate and co-chair of the Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York (DDAWNY) Family Committee, was interviewed, for the Capital Press Room radio show with Susan Arbetter. People Inc. Senior Companion Recognition Luncheon Honors Volunteers
Volunteers were recognized at the People Inc. Senior Companion Recognition Luncheon held May 30, at Schiller Park Community Center in Buffalo. Along with volunteers, elected officials and professionals in the area of senior services attended.
The People Inc. Senior Companion program helps seniors who are homebound and other adults who are frail maintain independence in their own homes. The program is provided in the cities of Buffalo and Lackawanna and the towns of Amherst and West Seneca with plans to expand.
The program would not be possible without the Federal Government’s Corporation for National Service, the State of New York, County of Erie, Cities of Buffalo and Lackawanna and the Towns of West Seneca and Amherst.
