Human Service Agencies Need Government Funding The lack of government funding continues to affect local human service agencies like People Inc. “According to the Developmental Disabilities Alliance of WNY, the State never paid $90 million dollars that was approved in the 2013 budget for agencies that help the developmentally disabled.” Individuals with developmental disabilities of all ages will be affected by state budget cuts. “Improving Communication for Caregivers of Loved Ones with Alzheimer’s and Dementia” Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias gradually diminish a person’s ability to communicate, which is devastating for the individual and his or her family. Caregivers and professionals coping at any stage of dementia are invited to attend the “Improving Communication for Caregivers of Loved Ones with Alzheimer’s and Dementia” presentation on Thursday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m., by the Alzheimer’s Association’s Western New York Chapter. It will be held at People Inc. Seniors Unlimited, 2635 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo.
Learn how improving communication with a loved one can enhance personal relationships, routines and time management. Creative activities will be shared. A Laughter Yoga session will also be provided. Disability Rights Advocate Alec Frazier to Speak at Museum of disABILITY History As part of its ongoing Person First Forum series, the Museum of disABILITY History will host Alec Frazier, disability rights advocate, who will lead a discussion entitled, “Nothing About Us without Us.” The event will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at 3826 Main Street in Buffalo.
The presentation will focus on concepts of advocacy and self-advocacy. Additionally, Frazier will discuss the University at Buffalo’s only disability-run endeavor, the Diversity in Disability symposia.
