Disability Rights Advocate Alec Frazier to Speak at Museum of disABILITY History
Do you want to learn more about advocacy? Disability Rights Advocate Alec Frazier will present “Nothing About Us without Us” as part of the Museum of disABILITY History’s ongoing Person First Forum series. The presentation will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014, from 1 p.m.-3 p.m., at 3826 Main Street in Buffalo.
Frazier will focus on concepts of advocacy and self-advocacy, as well as the University at Buffalo’s only disability-run endeavor, the Diversity in Disability symposia.

Raising Matty Christian Featured at Spring disABILITIES Film Festival
If you attend the Spring disABILITIES Film Festival and learn how to live by example….then we have accomplished our goal! Join us on Friday, April 25, 2014 for the Spring 2014 disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series, hosted by the Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. The goal of the event is to provide entertainment and information while exploring issues faced by individuals with disabilities.Raising Matty Christian, an inspirational documentary, will be the featured movie. The movie profiles the life of Matthew “Matty” Christian (1983-2009), from the town of Canton, Massachusetts, who was born without full limbs and a tongue. As told through interviews with his parents, brother and several close friends, Raising Matty Christian paints a portrait of an inspiring young man who never took no for an answer, achieved a great deal of success and set out to live life to the fullest.
Movie Times: 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Funds Raised through Spring It On For the first time, the Museum of disABILITY History participated in Spring It On, a 24-hour on-line fundraising event powered by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. Held on March 20, the campaign was designed to raise awareness and funds for not-for profit organizations throughout Western New York with a unique one-day focus. Nearly $500 was raised for educational programs offered by the Museum of disABILITY History. Program examples include a monthly speaker series that is open to the public and disABILITY etiquette programs where students and members of organizations can understand disability awareness, learn the importance of using person-first language and tips for interacting with individuals who have disabilities. Additionally, a “Disabilities Merit Badge Program” is offered for Boy Scouts with a unique experience and awareness for people with disabilities. “History in your Backyard” Cultural Attraction’s Seven-stop ‘Passport’ Event
Enjoy history close to home…you do not need to travel a great distance or spend a lot of money to enjoy some great family fun! Seven Erie and Niagara county cultural attractions are teaming up to present a collaborative weekend, May 8-10, enabling guests to visit all seven locations for one low price. Participants will receive a commemorative “passport” that will be stamped at each attraction. The passport will also contain discount coupons for local restaurants. Visit all seven locations and enter to win a grand prize for a pair of tickets for a Helicopter Trip over Niagara Falls. Passports can be purchased at any of the participating cultural attractions and can be used throughout the entire weekend. The cost is $25 for adults in advance, and $30 on the event weekend. The ticket price for children and students is $10 in advance, and $15 on the event weekend. Children 2 and under will be admitted free. A family ticket is also available for $50 in advance and $60 during the event.

Want to host a meeting, but do not have the space or looking for a different venue? Community organizations, businesses and networking groups are invited to rent meeting space at the Museum of disABILITY History. Located inside of a lovely two-story brick building, the Museum has two conference rooms available for rental purposes. Ethernet availability, laptop connection capabilities and other features are available. Each room is available for use Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and is fully ADA-compliant. Organizations are welcome to bring in their own food. Special permission is required to schedule a room outside of the standard hours.
