Patrick P. Lee Foundation Donates Grant to Elmwood Health Center 
The Patrick P. Lee Foundation recently donated a grant to the Elmwood Health Center, a primary care facility and an affiliate of People Inc. Funds were used to expand and remodel the Elmwood Health Center’s lobby and reception area to better accommodate patients. This project doubled the size of the old space and will provide much needed room for patients and staff alike.
 
 
 
Exceptional Artworks on Exhibit at Museum of disABILITY History
People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY History is proud to host Western New York’s Exceptional Artworks Juried Exhibit of 2010. In its entirety, the exhibit features more than 300 pieces including paintings, fine crafts, photography and mixed media artwork created by adults with developmental disabilities. This juried exhibit represents the best in show selected from last year’s exhibit by a team of professional artists and travels throughout the Western New York area for one year. The exhibit will be displayed at the Museum of disABILITY History until June 13. Stop by to see some very exquisite art pieces at 3826 Main Street in Amherst.

Twenty People Inc. Employees Earn WNY AmeriCorps ABLE Scholarship 
Twenty employees of People Inc., Western New York’s leading human services agency, were recently honored with the Western New York AmeriCorps 2011 ABLE Scholarship Award. The scholarship is a partnership between People Inc. and WNY AmeriCorps through AmeriCorps’s America Builds Lives through Education (ABLE) Program. Guardianship Program Growing
Due to proper care, advances in healthcare and better nutrition, people with developmental disabilities are living much longer. Due to this positive development, agencies like People Inc. have to adjust and develop programs that fit the needs of the people that they serve. One way People Inc. is addressing that need is through its Guardianship Program. Under the supervision of the Legal Department, People Inc.’s Guardianship Program has greatly expanded. The expansion is due in large part to the fact that so many people with developmental disabilities that the agency serves are now out surviving their parents and other family members or perhaps have had family members move away. In Memory: Robert B. Mayer
January 28, 1932 - April 1, 2011
 
People Inc. is saddened to announce the passing of Robert B. Mayer, at the age of 79, and sends condolences to the Mayer family. Mr. Mayer was a long-time supporter of People Inc. and served on its Board of Directors for two decades, including the leadership role of chairperson. A memorial fund has been established through the People Inc. Foundation at the family’s request.

People Inc. Senior Living Wellness Fair and Yard Sales
People Inc. Senior Living will host upcoming events for the community. People Inc.’s Leisuretimers Senior Living Apartments will host a Wellness Fair on May 17, from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at 364 Bloomingdale Road in Akron. Those who attend will learn more about the benefits of living in a senior living community and will have an opportunity to tour an apartment. The fair will feature various healthcare representatives. Two multi-family yard sales will take place in June. People Inc.’s Marigold Senior Living Apartments will host its yard sale on Friday, June 10, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at 3026 Grand Island Blvd. in Grand Island. People Inc.’s Sunflower Senior Living Apartments will host its yard sale on Friday, June 24, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at 146 Franklin Street in Lackawanna. Clothing, household goods and much more will be on sale. A portion of the proceeds benefit the People Inc. Senior Living tenant fund which is used for recreation activities.
 
People Inc. has 17 Senior Living locations across Western New York for seniors 62 and older. Rent is based on income. For more information, call 716.817.9090.

People Inc. Featured in Western New York Family Magazine
Two articles from People Inc. were contributed to the Western New York Family Magazine April 2011 issue of its Special Needs section. People Inc.’s Young Adult Life Transitions program is featured in the article, “From High School to Adult Life: The College Campus Experience.” The article was written by People Inc.’s Public Affairs intern Brogan McCabe. Helpful tips for parents are included in the article, “Personal Connection Makes a Difference for Parents of Kids with Special Need,” contributed by Nicole Forgione, People Inc. public affairs manager.
 
 
Lose the Training Wheels: June 27–July 1, 2011
Do you love the feeling of riding a bike? Learning to ride a two-wheeler is a rite of passage, but many people with disabilities may not realize. Lose The Training Wheels is changing that! People Inc., Down Syndrome Parents Group of WNY and Heritage Centers has partnered to provide an opportunity for individuals with disabilities with a program called Lose the Training Wheels. Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) and People Inc. Working Together
Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) serves Western New York in the prevention of housing discrimination. In the past, HOME has advocated on behalf of People Inc. This year’s annual fundraiser and dinner celebrated the significant role HOME has made in the lives of so many individuals and families in WNY. HOME’s mission is to promote the value of diversity and to ensure the people of Western New York an equal opportunity to live in the housing and in the community of their choice through education, advocacy, enforcement of fair housing laws, and the creation of housing opportunities.
