State Senate Approves Disability History Curriculum Legislation
As reported in the New York State Association of Community and Residential Agencies (NYSACRA) “News & Views” e-newsletter, this week the New York State Senate approved S.2352 to promote greater awareness and understanding of people with disabilities. Sponsored by Senator Mark Grisanti (Erie, Niagara), the legislation, if enacted, will require the New York State Education Department to make curriculum materials available to secondary schools which aid in the instruction on the understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities. Current statute requires the availability of the curriculum materials in elementary schools. According to the sponsor’s memo, pilot programs in schools located in Western New York have demonstrated the effectiveness of the curriculum in the classroom. The bill is sponsored in the Assembly (A.8466) by Assemblyman Michael Cusick (Richmond). More information will be announced soon about People Inc.’s involvement with the Disability History Curriculum.

Marcia Ergort Promoted to Vice President Residential Services
People Inc. is pleased to announce that Marcia Ergort was promoted to the position of Vice President Residential Services. Marcia started her career with People Inc. 35 years ago as an overnight staff at Center Street in East Aurora. Since that time she has been promoted into various management positions, most recently holding an Associate Vice President position in Residential Services. She has a Bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Buffalo. Marcia was the Western Region Vice President for the New York State Association of Community and Residential Agencies (NYSACRA) for four years and currently serves on NYSACRA’s Policy Committee. Congratulations, Marcia!

People Inc. Drive Fore Disabilities Golf Tournament
This year is People Inc.’s 11th Annual Drive Fore Disabilities Golf Tournament! It will be held Monday, August 20, at East Aurora Country Club. As in the past, the format will be four-man best ball scramble with your choice of an early round teeing off at 7:30 a.m. or the afternoon round which will start at 12:30 p.m. Spending the day golfing with friends on the beautiful hills of East Aurora Country Club, the abundant food and beverages and of course the prizes are just some of the reasons to participate! However, the best reason is to support a wonderful cause. As Western New York’s leading non-profit human services agency, People Inc. assists more than 10,000 individuals and their families. Through a variety of services, including residential, supported employment, community outreach, health care, senior living and recreation programs, the agency helps families and people with disabilities, as well as seniors, live more healthy, independent and productive lives.

CEO of Hunter’s Hope Foundation Tours Museum of disABILITY History
Recently, Jacque Waggoner, chief executive officer of Hunter’s Hope Foundation, received a personalized tour of the Museum of disABILITY History from Douglas Platt, curator and Brie Kishel, project coordinator. Jacque shared, “It is a wonderful thing you are doing.”
According to Douglas, Ms. Waggoner was impressed with the content and design of the Museum of disABILITY History. They spent time talking about the Museum’s inaugural exhibit, which is the “Birth of Newborn Screening” and it was mentioned that an exhibit about Krabbe disease could be developed in the future at the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute. Douglas shared that the Museum of disABILITY History would be happy to collaborate on the project as the Museum has an abundant amount of information about newborn screening, which has deep roots in Western New York.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day (DD Day) will be held on Thursday, May 24, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at a NEW location at the
Conference Center Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, NY. The convention has long been a staple of the Western New York developmentally disabled community, bringing together local and regional agencies, industry connected vendors and suppliers, direct support professionals and the individuals that all of these groups support. The conference, which includes 28 one-hour workshops, is the largest one of its kind in the United States.

Museum of disABILITY History is proud to be part of this event for the service fair.
The keynote speaker will be the Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network star, Zach Anner from “Rollin’ With Zach!” Anner is a comedian and cultural satirist born in Buffalo. He has cerebral palsy, which he calls the “sexiest of the palsies.” After graduating from high school with honors and a GED, Zach attended college at the University of Texas at Austin.

People Inc. was recently awarded the Golden Buffalo Award from the Buffalo Niagara Human Resource Association (BNHRA). The Golden Buffalo is awarded to a company that demonstrates the importance and positive impact strong human resource practices can have within an organization. The award recognizes an organization in Erie and Niagara County who has demonstrated creativity in the development and design of a human resource best practice, has aligned a human resource best practice with the organization’s overall mission and has recognizable and measurable positive outcomes in human resources.
