People Inc.’s Elmwood Health Center Receives Prestigious Award
Upon the high recommendation of the Community Foundation of Western and Central New York and WNY HEALTHeLINK, the Elmwood Health Center was honored at the New York eHealth Collaborative Gala and Awards Ceremony on October 15, in New York City. Honored as a New York Health IT Visionary for their pioneering use of technology to improve the lives of the community, the Elmwood Health Center in Buffalo, NY serves many of whom are un-or under-insured and struggle with chronic conditions. Ivan the Invacar Book Series Premieres
Fun and exciting reading for children
The Museum of disABILITY History is excited to share some fun news about a new children's book series that is now available! The book series will be about Ivan the Invacar, with the first book being Ivan The Invacar Helps Big Dog. All of the books have been written by James M. Boles, Ed.D., president and CEO of People Inc., along with a team of educators who reviewed the books throughout the process.

Successful Buffalo Chili FestOnce again, People Inc. and Web Art Designs had the community saying…HOT DANG! Held at Statler City in downtown Buffalo, this year’s Buffalo Chili Fest featured chili from all over Western New York. The options ranged from food trucks to fire companies to award-winning restaurants. It was an extremely close competition as every chef brought their A-game. Buffalo Chili Fest newcomer, Siena, won first prize from the celebrity judges as well as the People’s Choice Award, despite fierce competition by some other outstanding challengers!

International Interest Gained for Abandoned Asylums Book
Abandoned Asylums book brought back to life by the Museum of disABILITY History in Buffalo
Gaining intrigue from North America to UK and Down Under
part of the Abandoned History Series, offers the work of John Gray, who has captured through photography the final throes of the once majestic monuments of medical treatment that were state institutions for treating people with disabilities. Gray, of New England, spent twelve years taking photos that are eerie, while at the same time architecturally beautiful, of abandoned asylums in various towns and villages that mark New England’s landscape. Alongside the remarkable pictures, text allows readers to explore the history and current conditions of these asylums in the recently republished book by the Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc., and its publishing entity People Ink Press.

Ceremony of Remembrance at Niagara County Almshouse CemeteryPeople Inc. and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department held a Ceremony of Remembrance to honor the lives of individuals who now rest at Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery on Niagara Street Extension in Lockport on October 18. Former residents of the Niagara County Almshouse were commemorated with a program, an unveiling of a memorial garden and music. Approximately 70 names of individuals laid to rest in the cemetery were read during the program. Read more in the press release...

Throughout the last few months of the election season, People Inc. Public Affairs department held many educational events. The goal was to inform individuals in day programs and group homes about deadlines to register to vote, watch debates and be informed on issues and watch the debates.
There was a webcast of the National Forum on Disability Issues, a historic nonpartisan event at People Inc.’s office at 3131 Sheridan Drive in Amherst, NY. Participants from the People Inc. Young Adult Life Transitions Program at the University at Buffalo attended. The 2012 event builds on the success of the first ever forum organized by the disability community in 2008. The forum focused on the disability positions of the 2012 Presidential candidates. The candidates provided their positions on a wide variety of disability issues directly to the disability community.

Headway of Western New York Annual Walk, Run and Wheel 5K
The Headway of Western New York Annual Walk, Run and Wheel 5K was held on October 7, at the Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo. The event course provided participants a journey along Buffalo’s majestic waterfront. The goal of the fundraiser is to raise awareness for those living with traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities.
