“War and disABILITY” Unveiled at Museum of disABILITY History
People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY History recently opened its newest exhibit, “War and disABILITY” with an opening reception on August 18. Steve T. Banko III, retired field office director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and a Vietnam War veteran, was the keynote speaker. Steve Banko’s speech was powerful and thought provoking – see the video on YouTube. Other speakers included Judge Robert Russell and Eric Bauer, Museum of disABILITY History Board Member and exhibit contributor.
The exhibit is on display now through December 31 and covers American national history and the nation’s involvement in wars both at home and abroad. Topics covered include people with disabilities in war and war efforts at home, perceptions of veterans who are disabled in popular culture, neuropsychological injuries, the evolution of medical and military technologies and legislation, rehabilitation and reintegration issues facing veterans with disabilities. Highlights consist of the establishment of the Invalid Corps during the Civil War, the “Elwyn Boys” participation during WWII, and the introduction of Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals. As the technology of war has advanced so has the number of injuries resulting in permanent disabilities. Survival from these injuries has been the direct result of ever evolving medical technologies.

People Inc.’s Elmwood Health Center Earns National Recognition
People Inc.’s Elmwood Health Center has been recognized as a Physician Practice Connections – Patient Centered Medical Home (PPC-PCMH) by the National Commission for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Officials from NCQA officials said that the three-year recognition was awarded to the Elmwood Health Center for using information systems to measure practice-wide clinical quality and improve clinical outcomes at the point of care. The Elmwood Health Center implemented electronic medical records technology just over one year ago. Currently, all the providers at the Elmwood Health Center are using the electronic medical record on a routine basis. To learn more, read the press release….

People Inc. Receives Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency
People Inc. is pleased to announce a grant that was recently awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of $46,000. The FEMA grant will be used to purchase carbon monoxide detectors and heat and smoke sensors for the agency’s group homes. People Inc. operates more than 100 community-based residences across Erie County, and including parts of Niagara and Chautauqua counties. The detectors and sensors will supplement existing safety equipment in People Inc.’s residences and enhance the agency’s safety measures. Installation of the equipment will be accompanied by fire safety training for our residential staff and residents. For more information, read the press release….

Headway of WNY 2nd Annual 5K Run
Looking for something fun to do outside while summer weather is still around? Then bring your friends and family down to The Hatch at the Erie Basin Marina on Saturday, September 10, 2011 for the 2nd Annual 5K Run to benefit Headway of Western New York, Inc., an affiliate of People Inc. The entrance fee is $25 on the day of the race. Everyone is invited to walk, wheel or run to help raise money for Headway of Western New York, an agency that supports and advocates for individuals with brain injuries and other disabilities.
Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and runners will begin at 9 a.m. with walkers and wheelers following shortly after at 9:30 a.m. The course will run through Buffalo’s gorgeous waterfront and a commemorative t-shirt will be given to the first 150 registrants. After the race, everyone is then invited to enjoy the post party with an award ceremony that will include food, music, pop, water, beer and an auction. Any non-registrants for the race can attend the post party by purchasing a $5 admission ticket. The day is sure to be fun for all ages and we hope to see everyone there to help support a great cause.

disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series Features “Where’s Molly?”
The Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. will host the 7th Annual disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series on Thursday, October 13 at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts. This year’s film will be “Where’s Molly?” – a documentary that follows the journey of Jeff Daly as he searches for his sister Molly after 47 years of separation. Jeff finally learns the truth about the family secret that kept him from his sister, in a reunion that will warm your heart. We are pleased to welcome Jeff and Cindy Daly as this year’s speakers.
Cocktail Reception starts at 6 p.m.
Live performance by Sujeet Desai, Professional Musician and Self-Advocate
Film Screening begins at 7 p.m.

Hot Dang – Annual Buffalo Chili Fest at Staler City
Hot Dang! The Annual Buffalo Chili Fest is back and bigger than ever! The event will be held Sunday, October 16, from 1 p.m.-5 p.m., at Statler City, 107 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY. There will be live music, People Inc.’s Kids on the Block of Western New York puppet show, prizes, giveaways and plenty of Chili from restaurants all over Western New York. The event is presented by WebArt Designs and proceeds benefit People Inc. There will be special guests from two new TCT children’s television shows. Meet the director and stars from Captain Chuckberry and the Super Silly Science Show!

At Bat…Miracle League Baseball
It was a day filled with hopes and dreams being accomplished in Grand Island on August 30. Adoring fans – parents, siblings, grandparents and friends – watched as their loved one with a disability played baseball with some help from the Buffalo Sabres. The Miracle League of Western New York Field presented by the Buffalo Sabres, a baseball field and sports complex in Grand Island, recently opened which is designed for children with disabilities.
