disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series to feature the movie “Bully”
The Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. are pleased to host the 8th Annual disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts. A reception will start at 6 p.m., film screening at 7 p.m. The featured film is “Bully,” followed by guest speaker Jesse Saperstein, best-selling author, autism advocate and motivational speaker.
The Film Festival will feature the award winning and acclaimed documentary Bully, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch. Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year. The topic of bullying is an emerging social concern that has been played out in headlines all across the world. Bullying is a topic that cuts across gender, age, ethnic and economic demographics. The movie features five kids and their families by offering an intimate, unflinching look at how bullying has touched their lives.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Forum
In order to better educate our community on the topic of bullying, including the bullying of individuals with disabilities, the Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. will host a Bullying Awareness and Prevention Forum on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, located at 3860 Main Street in Buffalo (located next door to the Museum of disABILITY History). The panel will be made up of local experts on bullying awareness and prevention. Attendees will learn about the Museum of disABILITY History’s brand-new “kNOw bullying” program, which will premiere in school districts across Western New York in January of 2013. The workshop cost is $5.00/person, which includes a free admission voucher to the 8th Annual disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series on October 4. To RSVP for the forum, call 716.629.3615.

Congressmember Kathy Hochul Visits People Inc. Oak Senior Living

Upon the high recommendation of the Community Foundation of Western and Central New York and WNY HEALTHeLINK, People Inc.’s Elmwood Health Center will be honored at the upcoming New York eHealth Collaborative Gala and Awards Ceremony in New York City as a New York Health IT Champion for their pioneering use of technology to improve the lives of the community that the Elmwood Health Center serves, many of whom are un- or under-insured and struggle with chronic conditions. Assistive Technology Expo
The Assistive Technology Expo will be held on October 4, 2012, at Lucarelli’s Banquet Center, 1830 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The expo is being sponsored by Parent Network of WNY, People Inc. and Early Childhood Direction Center.
The Assistive Technology Expo is for assistive technology users, their families, educators, clinicians, agency providers and administrators. The expo will feature keynote speaker Jonathan Campbell, assistive technology specialist with the PACER Simon Technology Center in Minnesota.
The expo will include a vendor fair consisting of local and national assistive technology representatives. Two panels of experts will talk about what technology is available and how to incorporate it across all settings to enhance quality of life of individuals who use assistive technology.

We are Still Looking for a Few Good Chefs!
Restaurant chefs are needed to participate in the Buffalo Chili Fest! The event will be held on Sunday, October 14, from 1 p.m.-5 p.m., at Statler City, 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Chili samples will be featured from some of the area’s finest restaurant chefs. The event will include live music, a photo booth, People Inc.’s Kids on the Block of Western New York puppet show, prizes, celebrity judges and plenty of chili. There will be awards and bragging rights upon conclusion of the event, as voted on by the public. The event is presented by WebArt Designs and proceeds benefit People Inc., Western New York’s largest human service agency. For more information, check out www.buffalochilifest.com. Walk with Headway of Western New York
What: Headway of Western New York “Walk, Wheel and Run”

Alison Barkoff is an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice who works to enforce the Olmstead decision in Washington, D.C.. The Olmstead case ruled that unwarranted institutionalization or segregation of persons with disabilities was discrimination violating the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). The Supreme Court ruled in favor of enabling the right of people with disabilities to live in their communities.
