The topic focused on the 980 individuals in Western New York waiting for residential placement. Participants, parents and providers shared personal stories about the need for residential placement and stressed to Senator Gallivan the need for the State of New York to address this need. Advocating for people with developmental disabilities
Contributed by Assemblyman Ray Walter

Every year the state passes a budget and every year the Assembly spends days arguing over what to fund and what to cut. The most egregious part of this year’s budget was a $90 million cut to the Office for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) that only affected non-profit groups, like People Inc., that provide services to those with developmental disabilities. People Inc. President meets with Minority Leader of the NYS Assembly
New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R, I, C-Canandaigua); President of People Inc., James M. Boles, Ed.D.; Chief Operating Officer Rhonda Frederick; and People Inc. Public Affairs Director Kevin Horrigan met recently to thank Minority Leader Kolb for his and his colleagues efforts to restore $90 million in proposed cuts in funding to programs serving people with developmental disabilities in New York State. Mr. Kolb was kind enough to drive out to the western end of the state and visit us at People Inc.’s headquarters in Williamsville.
With the continual communications with representatives such as Assemblymember Kolb, all members of the State Legislature and most importantly our members of the Western New York Assembly and Senate delegation, People Inc. will be able to make more gains to secure services. Their support this past spring was critical and should be commended.
