    People Inc. Hosting Southtowns Open Interview Day on September 30 at Erie Community College South Campus

    September 18, 2015: People Inc. is hiring qualified candidates to assist individuals with disabilities with personal care, household duties and recreational activities so they can live as independently as possible. A Southtowns Open Interview Day will be held on Wednesday, September 30, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Erie Community College South Campus, Career Center, 4041 Southwestern Boulevard, Orchard Park.  Full and part-time group home staff, program instructors, residential habilitation instructors and nurses are being hired for locations in the southern tier, including: Boston, East Aurora, Eden, Hamburg, Orchard Park and Silver Creek. Day, evening and overnight positions are available.  Employees receive numerous benefits, including health insurance, 401(k) pension plan, tuition reimbursement and paid time off. Additionally, People Inc. offers paid training, holiday incentives and other benefits.  Candidates should dress professionally and be prepared for an interview with a resume.     People Inc. Hosting Technology Sessions for Older Adults in Akron

    “Ready, Set, Click and Learn” connects smiles and miles through technology People Inc. is hosting “Ready, Set, Click and Learn,” a free, interactive four-week program that teaches people age 55 and older, how to safely connect with loved ones through video chat, electronic calendaring and social media outlets, as well as access information through Internet searches. Sessions will be taught by an instructor, with mentoring provided by volunteer students from the Akron Senior High School’s Interact service club. The program will take place at the Akron Newstead Senior Center, 5691 Cummings Road, Akron, NY, beginning on September 28, and running every Tuesday and Thursday through October 21, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. A limited number of tablets will be available and complimentary refreshments will be served. This class is open to the public. You do not need to be a member of the Center to participate. Transportation is available through Hearts and Hands for this program. COVID-19 safety precautions are in place. Mask requirements will be determined by the host location. To enroll in all sessions, contact the Center at 716.542.6645 or add your name to the sign-up sheet located at the Center by Monday, September 20. Class size is limited to 15. This program is provided by People Inc. through support by a grant from the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York. Full and part-time group home staff, community based instructors, self-determination assistants and nurses are being hired for locations in the southern tier, including: East Aurora, Hamburg, Orchard Park and Springville. Day, evening and overnight positions are available.     People Inc. Hosts 11th Annual Drive Fore Disabilities Golf Tournament

    Teams Play for Specific Programs and Services What: People Inc. Foundation’s 11 th Annual Drive Fore Disabilities Golf Tournament When: Monday, August 20, 2012 The afternoon round of golf with registration and lunch begins at 11 a.m.; tee-off starts at 12:30 p.m. Cocktails along with live, silent and basket auctions begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and an awards presentation at 7 p.m. Saxman Slim will perform during the tournament’s evening program and dinner. Where: East Aurora Country Club, 300 Girdle Rd., East Aurora Who: Local business and community leaders, along with People Inc. representatives. John Gurtler II will emcee the evening program. He is an American sportscaster from Orchard Park, NY. Gurtler II is most known for having succeeded Ted Darling as television play-by-play announcer for the Buffalo Sabres, a position he held from 1992 until 1995. He currently serves as the radio play-by-play announcer for the Buffalo Bandits and has served as the public address announcer for the Buffalo Bills. The golf tournament chairperson is Robert O’Leary of Parkview Health Services and Beth Montague is the Golf Auction Chairperson. Committee members also include:  Mark C. Byrne, Vanner Insurance Agency; Roger Hoffman, Northeast Mechanical; Joseph Lanigan, MD, Cardiologist; Jim Sutherland, Allied Mechanical; and Gay Meyers, a participant of People Inc.     People Inc. Hosts Active Shooter Response Training Instructor Course through ALICE Training Institute

    Training provides education and proactive approaches to violent intruder events What: ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) Active Shooter Response Training Instructor Course When: Wednesday, April 26, 2017; key times for visuals/interviews: 1:30 to 4 p.m.  Where: People Inc. Satellite Office, 280 Spindrift Drive, Williamsville Information: ALICE is a set of proactive, options-based strategies that increase a person’s chance of survival during a violent intruder or active shooter event. The training course is designed to teach law enforcement, as well as school, church, hospital, workplace administrators and employees skills and strategies that bridge the gap between the time a violent event begins and when law enforcement arrives.  As a health and human services industry leader, People Inc. is one of the first agencies in New York state to bring this cutting-edge training to its employees and will be one of the first hosts of a Train the Trainer Program in the Western New York area. “People Inc. is proud to partner with the ALICE Training Institute, providing this valuable instruction to our staff and other organizations throughout the area,” said People Inc. Associate Vice President and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Thomas Ess. The 30 trainees in attendance are members of the Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York, local law enforcement, local school districts, People Inc. staff and several out-of-state for-profit companies. Attendees will become knowledgeable in concepts, statistics and information about active shooter situations and why the ALICE training is effective; experience live scenario drills that compare passive vs. active responses; and learn the strategies needed to become an effective ALICE instructor for their own organization.  ALICE is the nation’s first training program for citizens to increase their survival chances and save lives, if faced with a violent intruder. The ALICE Training Institute has trained thousands of police departments, K-12 school districts, higher education, businesses, hospitals and houses of worship in the ALICE protocols over the last 15 years. The Institute is located in Medina, Ohio.     People Inc. Initiates Cemetery Restoration at the Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery

    June 7, 2012: Staff and volunteers from People Inc., Western New York’s largest human services agency, will soon be hard at work restoring the Niagara County Almshouse Cemetery on Niagara Street Extension in Lockport. James M. Boles, Ed.D., president of People Inc., received permission from county officials to begin this project. This is the fourth institutional cemetery in which this agency has been involved. Dr. Boles will conduct a presentation about the history of the project to a Buffalo State College Anthropology class on Monday, June 11, at 8:30 a.m. at the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Juron Conference Room, 5526 Niagara Street in Lockport. The cemetery recorded burials from 1830-1912 and estimates that more than 1,400 people who resided at the Niagara County Almshouse are buried there most with anonymous graves. The burial grounds, above the former location of the Almshouse or Poorhouse, are quite overgrown with vines and bushes. Professors and students from the Buffalo State College Anthropology Department will use ground penetrating radar to determine the exact location of the cemetery. Anthropology Department Chairperson and Associate Professor Lisa M. Anselmi will have her students conduct the work as a summer project. The ground penetrating radar machine will help locate remains and determine boundaries of the cemetery. Records will be transcribed from the Niagara County Historian’s Office and the Museum of disABILITY History, a project of People Inc., to create a searchable database. People Inc. will install a monument and hold a Ceremony of Remembrance at the conclusion of the project. Research has shown that the individuals of the Niagara County Almshouse were considered “sick, insane and crippled.” It is one of the first institutions of care that were provide to people with disabilities, said Boles. The restoration endeavor is an example of the strides that have been made in the treatment of people with disabilities and to acknowledge their history. “We have completed cemetery restoration projects in two Gowanda cemeteries and installed a monument in Perrysburg,” said Boles. People Inc. would like to acknowledge the community members that have been instrumental to help initiate this cemetery restoration project: Niagara County Sheriff’s Office; Craig E. Bacon, Deputy Niagara County Historian; Robin DeVoe, Niagara County Building and Grounds Commissioner; Melissa Dunlap, Niagara County Historical Society; Catherine Emerson, Niagara County Historian; Undersheriff Michael Filicetti; Wayne Jagow, Niagara County Clerk; George Maziarz, New York State Senator; William L. Ross, Chairman Niagara County Legislature; and Sheriff James Voutour. The Niagara County Division of Buildings and Grounds, the Aktion Club and many other volunteers will be assisting with the project.     People Inc. Introduces Senior Companion Program

    Helping to Make Independence for Seniors a Reality   People Inc. has recently acquired the Senior Companion Program from Child and Family Services. The program’s goal is to provide aid and, ultimately, independence to seniors and other adults who are frail or homebound. Among other activities, the Senior Companion can assist with daily living tasks, such as grocery shopping and bill paying; provide socialization and develop friendship; alert doctors and family members to potential problems; and provide respite to family and caregivers.   A Senior Companion, 55 or older, who lives in Erie County, volunteers his or her time supporting the lives of older adults. They serve older adults who are frail, adults with disabilities, those with terminal illnesses and offer respite for caregivers.   Seniors who receive assistance from a Companion receive quality support and will find countless opportunities open to them with the help of a Companion. They will also have the ability to live independently in their homes or apartments. Seniors who receive the support are 55 or older who live in Erie County.   Senior Companions are supervised by the professional staff of People Inc. and other collaborating agencies. All Senior Companions receive 20 hours of pre-service orientation, as well as four hours of in-service training monthly. In total, senior companions complete 40 hours of orientation training. Most Senior Companions have had previous experience in caring for the elderly.
